Looking Ahead to 2010

2009 was a great year for the Sunderland Compact. By working together we were able to produce the refreshed Sunderland Compact which was endorsed by the Sunderland Partnership in June. To date 66 organisations have signed up to the Compact, and we hope that this will increase in 2010 as more organisations recognise the benefits of signing up to the Sunderland Compact, benefits which include:

• equity in relationships
• informed policy decisions, based on the expert knowledge of groups working directly with people on the ground
• better programme funding that more closely reflects the needs of users
• progress towards a more equal society, by identifying and tackling inequality and discrimination
• value for money

If your organisation has signed up to the Compact we hope that one of your New Year's Resolutions will be to make sure that your organisation is Compact Compliant and that you know how to use the Compact. To help you with this a training programme will be developed and rolled out over the coming months.

If your organisation has not yet signed up, why not make it your New Year's Resolution to consider the benefits of the Compact and become a signatory.

The Compact provides a framework for the development of a relationship between statutory partners and the local Voluntary and Community Sector [VCS] organisations.

As you know a significant amount of work has been undertaken to refresh and review the Sunderland Compact. The Council has on the behalf of the Sunderland Partnership led the process in partnership with the VCS which began in 2007.

The process has given all stakeholders the opportunity to be engaged and input into various working groups, and has involved a comprehensive consultation period. A great deal of the consultation was undertaken by Sunderland Centre for Voluntary Service and voluntary sector organisations supporting the development of specific codes of practice.

The latest refresh of the Sunderland Compact and four of its supporting Codes of Practice have been endorsed by the Delivery and Improvement Board of the Sunderland Partnership. The Council's Cabinet has also agreed the documents at its meeting in June 2009. The documents can be accessed at www.sunderlandcompact.org.uk.

The Sunderland Partnership are inviting all organisations through their Chief Officers and decision making structures to support a Compact way of working and sign up to it.

To sign up just complete and return the Compact proforma sign up sheet.

Following the return of the form and sign up, all organisations will receive a specially designed Compact Folder containing various helpful information. Organisations will also receive a unique registration number and will be registered onto www.sunderlandcompact.org.uk

The number will act as confirmation that your organisation agrees to work in partnership to achieve a Compact way of working.

A Compact Implementation Group made up of Statutory and VCS partners will be established and will feed into the Sunderland Partnership. The group will seek to ensure all organisations develop a Sunderland Compact way of working and embed the key principles into the values and operations of organisations.
