The Woodward Charitable Trust
Funding mainly aimed at one-off projects
The Woodward Charitable Trust is one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. The Trusts share a common administration, but are otherwise independent of each other. In 2004/2005 grants totalling £381,966 were paid to 98 charitable organisations.
The Trustees favour small-scale, locally based initiatives. Funding is primarily for one-off projects, but they are willing to consider funding for core costs. All applicants are encouraged to discuss their application with the Trust administrator.
The Trustees operate a reactive and flexible grant-making strategy and are currently giving priority to the areas listed below:
Social and ethnic minority groups, including young people at risk of exclusion, refugees, asylum seekers and travellers
Prisons, with particular emphasis on post-release help and on families of offenders and ex-offenders
Addiction, including projects tackling the social exclusion elements and preventative programmes
Homelessness, especially affecting young people and women, and covering facilities such as women's refuges
People experiencing domestic violence
The Trustees may also consider:
Arts outreach work by local groups, particularly in fields that do not attract funding from other Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts
Disability projects
Environmental projects, especially with a strong education element, provided they are distinctive and not merely a part of current fashion.
Between five and ten large grants of between £10,000-£50,000 are made per year, usually to projects within the five priority areas, and spread over a number of years. Applications for larger grants will only be considered if they are discussed with the administrator prior to submission.
Between forty to fifty one-off small grants are made each year for £100-£9,999; most of these are for less than £5,000. A further thirty to forty small grants for £500-£2,000 are made for children's summer play schemes.
The Trustees will not normally fund:
Charities whose annual turnover exceeds £250,000
Construction projects such as playgrounds, village halls, and disabled accesses
General school appeals including out of hours provision
Hospices
Medical research
Overseas projects
Parish facilities
Playgroups
Requests for vehicles
Small grants to large projects
The Trustees review general applications twice a year, usually in January and July with the exception of summer scheme applications, which are considered in May. They will only consider appeals made on their own application form which is available by post, email or from the website.
Applications for the January meeting should be received at Allington House no later than 30 November 2006. Summer play scheme application forms should be received no later that 1 April 2007 and will be considered in May.
Potential applicants are encouraged to telephone the administrator, Karin Hooper, to discuss their work if they think it might meet the Trustees' criteria. Contact:
