Regional First for ETEC
ETEC will be the first place in the north east to pilot a new qualification for community development workers. A pilot module for the Higher Professional Diploma in Development Work will be launched in February 2008.

The qualification aims to bridge the gap between work-based National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and academic studies. The year-long Higher Diploma, comprising of 12 units, will lead to a full, NVQ level four diploma. Successful candidates can use the qualification to progress on to the second year of a Foundation Degree in Community Development Work at Sunderland University.

Louise Anderson, ETEC’s Community Development Manager, said: “We are aiming the qualification at two groups of people. The first group comprises of Community Development Workers, who want to aim higher than a level three qualification. The second group of people are community development managers, who may have a first degree or equivalent in another subject but for whom community development work is a relatively new discipline.”

Interviews for candidates, who wish to take part in the pilot module, take place at the end of January.

ETEC is currently talking to a number of public and voluntary sector organisations in Sunderland to establish, which units would be most useful across all areas of community development work. The full Higher Professional Diploma in Development Work will be available from September 2008. For more information, please call Louise Anderson, Community Development Manager, on (0191) 514 6150

Quality Courses
Quality: Choosing Between Different Approaches

Project North East are offering free training to the voluntary and community sectors to provide details of the main quality assurance standards and models, so that they can choose the most suitable one when implementing a quality system in their organisation. The course will take place on the 12th February 2008 at MPH Accessible Media, Pelaw, Gateshead .

Implementing PQASSO
Voluntary and community organisations want to provide the best service possible for their users and stakeholders – that is, people who have an interest in what they do. There is also external pressure to show that they provide quality services and manage their organisations efficiently and effectively. “Implementing PQASSO” will help organisations decide if this is the system for them and give them the knowledge and skills to implement the system within their organisation.

What will I learn from the course?
• An understanding of PQASSO and the self assessment process
• How to implement PQASSO in your organisation
• What steps and key elements needs to be included in the process
• The roles and responsibilities of your key stakeholders in the process

The course will take place on the 4th & 5th March 2008 at MPH Accessible Media, Pelaw, Gateshead.

To book a place on either of the above courses please contact: Debbie Leckey Project North East 7-15 Pink Lane Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5DW (0191) 261 6009 email: debbie.leckey@pne.org

Funding

Equality and Human Rights Commission – new grants programme for grassroots organisations (UK)

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has announced the launch of a new £10 million grants programme aimed at funding grassroots organisations that work to promote equality.

Applications are particularly encouraged from organisations working in the following priority areas:
• Organisations working to promote good relations between and within different groups in their local community
• Organisations whose work highlights equality and human rights
• Casework – that is, organisations that provide legal advice and representation to victims of discrimination

Organisations must be able to explain how their project will achieve real and meaningful change. Organisations must apply for funding for a maximum of three outcomes (outcomes being defined as the changes you plan to achieve in the short, medium and/or long term as a result of your activities or services).

Examples of eligible projects include those that:
• Reduce the impact of hate crime
• Work with the media to promote greater awareness of equality or human rights issues
• Provide legal advice to victims of discrimination. Please note that the Commission does not usually fund organisations that represent only one particular group, unless they are seeking funds to widen their work to cover individuals or groups from other backgrounds

The Commission does not usually fund statutory bodies. Organisations can apply for funding of up to £40,000 per outcome for up to three outcomes (a maximum of £120,000 per application). Successful projects will be funded for 12 months, starting from 1 April 2008. Full guidance notes and application forms are available to download from the Commission’s website at: www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/aboutus/grants/pages/grantsandfunding.aspx

You should send two signed copies of your completed application form to: Grants Unit Equality and Human Rights Commission 3 More London Riverside Tooley Street London SE1 2RG

You must also send an electronic copy by email to: grants@equalityhumanrights.com

The deadline for submitting applications is 5pm on Monday 4 February.
